Homemade Conan Pinball Machine!

It’s been a long time since I checked in at the various popular Conan related BrazilianOrkutforums, so I did a quick drive by and quickly discovered a post by a chap with the handle Yuri Fulone, explaining how he and three friends spent a year on a project recently...a Conan pinball machine that features all handmade details, electronic music from the ’82 movie, quality mp3 sounds, lights, multiball, captive ball, ramps, castle, cave, and more!

To my knowledge, there’s only one other Conan pinball machine design in existence, so this is pretty exciting news indeed!  So I head over to Yuri’s Facebook page and lo and behold, some photos of that very Conan pinball project!

There’s even video evidence, although it’s not the best of quality.  The video starts out a little slow so you might want to jump straight to the 4:15 mark, where you can get a look at the machine in action!

A hearty Crom! shout out to the designers - Robson A. OliveiraSandro O. Ventura, Wilson S. Santos, and of course Yuri Fulone for unleashing more new Conan awesomeness upon us!

Conan Resin Kit Sculpture by Jason Spyda Adams!

Now if you’re saying to yourself that this sculpt is old news as it has been around forever, let it be known that this is NOT the version from 8 years ago.  Jason Spyda Adams of Spyda Creations felt that his sculpting ability has improved since then, so he recently re-sculpted it.  The new version is bigger, and I must say that Conan’s “come hither” look is more bad-ass than ever before!

This unpainted, unbuilt resin model Conan kit in 1/9th scale includes a certificate of authenticity signed by Spyda and Neal Adams, and it's yours for the taking for $150 or less (if you can find one).  It is, of course, based on this drawing by his father, legendary comic book artist Neal Adams...

A little more about Jason, unceremoniously ripped from his website...

"Jason Spyda Adams is a sculptor trained in New York city, at the prestigious School of Visual Arts, New York's premiere art college, Where he graduated with 4 portfolios, 3-D design, Illustration, Air brush, and fine Art. Despite his art training, Spyda is self taught in sculpting, having never found classes anywhere that offered what he wanted to learn. You may have seen his work in various toys over the years. In recent years, he's made a push to have his work seen more as art than product. Spyda has been devoting his time to designing and sculpting his own original works, and on occasion, working on a design or two of his father's, Neal Adams.”

Now check out the new sculpt from every imaginable angle!

New Conan Fan Fiction!

I've read my fair share of Conan fanfic over the years, but Von Kalmbach sets the bar to a whole new level with his short but engaging tale, Wolf in Moonlight!  It was originally posted on the Official Robert E. Howard Forum earlier this month (here) and very much deserves a wider audience, so I'm reposting it here and now!

Wolf in Moonlight

A Conan vignette.

© 2012
Von Kalmbach

As the full moon rose in the starlit sky,
And the winds roared madly down the glen,
I caught the gleam in a fey maid’s eye,
And fled from the wild wolf’s den.

THE YOUNG TRAVELER gazed apprehensively around him as he strode through the dense woodland. He was no coward, but the gloomy winding trail through the close-packed trees unnerved him. Above, the intertwining branches swayed, blotting out the moonlight, and the leaves soughed and rustled like a thousand ghosts in conclave.

The traveler strode out of the woods and onto a wild windswept heath. The moon rose high and full in the midnight sky, etching all in spectral splendor. Across the grassy heath were patches of gorse and heather, and their scent on the blustering breeze rose to his brain like a heady liquor after the solemn dankness of the woods. The traveler’s gaze took in the sweeping outline of a great hill in the distance that rose to a smooth crest, upon which was set a ring of somber dolmens. A tiny fire flickered at the center of that ring, and the traveler muttered a bewildered oath. Who else would be abroad at night in this wild place?

The traveler ran toward the hill. His long stride ate up the distance as he loped across the heath with pantherine grace. His fur cloak, trews and boots, the broad sword and poniard on his wide belt, were those of a Northman, seeming somehow incongruous upon the powerful frame of this young black-haired warrior. He was at one with the wilds, his blue eyes fierce with the exultation of exertion.

The traveler slowed to a cautious walk as he approached the base of the hill. His deep chest rose and fell, but the long run seemed not to have drained his vast reservoir of vitality to any appreciable degree. He set a huge scarred hand upon the hilt of his sword and ascended warily to the crest of the hill.

At the center of the silent ring of dolmens a small campfire flickered in a shallow fire pit rimmed with stones. The firelight licked luridly at the rune carved faces of the dolmens, which seemed now to the traveler like sullen giants gathered for a feast. A small lean to, offering some protection from the elements, had been constructed between two of the dolmens, and though the camp seemed to have been recently abandoned, the traveler sensed its occupant was still close by. As this thought crossed his mind, the traveler heard a movement and looked up to see someone step from the darkness into the firelight.

It was a woman who stood there with the firelight dancing on her beautiful face and wild blue wayward eyes. She had black hair, like the travelers; seemingly born of the same race. She strolled towards him fearlessly, and his eyes roved with fierce appreciation over the full breasts, narrow supple waist and broad hips beneath her simple fawn colored tunic. She made no attempt to draw about her the long cloak which cascaded from her shoulders, apparently as oblivious to the chill wind that stirred her garments, as she was to the burning gaze of the traveler. She seemed to be, like him, a scion of the wilderness.

"What brings you to Morwen’s camp, o stranger? You are garbed like the wolves of the north, yet you are clearly not of the Aesir nor Vanir."

"My name is Conan, a Cimmerian," stated the youth, "and I have come from the north. I marched with the Rig-Jarl Hjorl, and we spilled red blood in tides upon the snow, where the blades and axes of the Aesir flamed and thundered, shattering the shields of the Vanir."

"No whim of fate has brought you to my hearth." She moved up close to him and smiled as she ran her hands over his chest and heavy arms; she traced with her fingers the scars of battle that crossed his iron frame. "You are forged of steel and blood, in the flames of war. I have sung my song on the winds for such a one as you, and the Godess heard my call. She has sent a fit mate for Morwen."

Conan narrowed his eyes at her presumption, but the sight and the scent of her was like a fire in his veins, and he readily assented when she slipped into his embrace. He kissed her fiercely, and drank of her own wild kisses. He laid one hand upon her breast, the other slipped inside her tunic and around her supple waist, to caress her back and draw her to him.

"Crom!" The Cimmerian cursed, and threw the woman from him. She spun with lithe grace, facing him from beyond the fire with a wolfish smile upon her lips.

"How is this?" she asked mockingly. "You are a man among men, but yet not man enough for a woman of the Tuatha de Cernunos?"

Conan swore a vehement oath at the name of that heathen brood, then backed away from the firelight.

"If I cannot taste of your love," spoke Morwen quietly across the flames, a feral gleam in her eyes, "then at least I can taste of your flesh!"

Then the youth, Conan, turned and fled. Morwen’s laughter sounded behind him.

The blood pounded wildly in Conan’s brain as he ran down the hill and across the heath in the moonlight. The superstitious dreads of his people filled his mind with fearful images of the Children of Cernunos. Nor was his fear ill-founded.

Conan stopped and glanced back to see a huge black shape slink from between the dolmens and lope down the hill. Then he turned and ran on across the heath.

The Cimmerian knew that in spite of all his speed the infernal creature would gain upon him long before he reached the sanctuary of the treeline. As he ran he cast about for a place to turn at bay. He saw a small hillock crowned with limestone, and his boots found footing on the stone. He turned, and saw the huge black wolf, as large as a pony, fast upon his heels. It's jaws were agape, it's eyes ablaze with preturnatural savagery, as silently it leaped.

Conan’s sword flashed in a frosty arc, backed with every desperate ounce of iron thew. The massive head of the wolf spun through the air in a spiral of blood, and it’s huge body crashed into him, bearing him down under its weight. For a long while Conan lay there with all the breath knocked out of him. Then he heaved the headless carcass from him with a curse and rose, drenched in gore, scarce able to believe that he still lived.

He stared at the severed head as it shimmered in the moonlight. It was the head of Morwen which now lay there in the grass, her sightless eyes staring up at the nighted sky. At his feet lay her headless body, indistinguishable now from that of a woman, save that along her spine from nape to lower back ran a long thick band of hair, like the pelt of a wolf.

Then the hackles rose on the young Conan’s neck as he witnessed a grisly sight. For the beautiful head of Morwen twisted on the ground, her eyelids fluttered, and her dead eyes glimmered with an eldritch flame.

"No man can slay a Child of Cernunos by the light of the silvery moon," she said. "Oh Conan, stay with me and be my lover! Such pleasures shall be ours. Let us dance together with the horned ones in their secret groves."

Then Conan ran again across that spectral heath, away from the ghastly dolmen on the hill. Behind him Morwen’s hellish laughter rose hauntingly up into the star-strewn sky.

The End

If you enjoyed that short romp through the woods, then you'll definitely want to take the jump (here) and immerse yourself in another of Von's Conan tales, The Nestor Synopsis!

Dark Horse News!

I’ve never been one to post about new Conan releases from Dark Horse because they get good coverage elsewhere, and by people who are much more proficient at writing than I’ll probably ever be.  Not that I always agree with what’s being said but…hey, if someone at DH were to throw me a bone not only would I keep it on the DL, but I’d be willing to say ridiculously positive things about their weakerofferings too!  It’s true that I try to keep things pretty upbeat and positive when I post around here, so I suppose that I (the pot) shouldn’t be calling other critics (the kettle) black.

Since I tend to post a substantial amount of comics related material, I’ve been thinking about giving Dark Horse a little better coverage than I have in the past (apologies in advance to those over at DH that just read this and threw up a little).  Soooooo, what’s been shaking on the Dark Horse front of late?

Well, the Wood/Various-Artist Conan the Barbarian is at issue #12 now and people have been raving about it...there's no middle ground here it seems, either you love it or you hate it.  Personally I'm in the latter camp and Dark Horse hasn't pocketed any of my doubloons because of it...

But from what we've seen of Mirko Colak (who’s taking over art related duties for issues #13 and #14) I'm going to set aside by disdain for Brian “if he only could” Wood and start picking these up…as long as someone at Dark Horse pinky swears not to bring Mr. Wood back for any future Conan runs.

If you haven't seen these, then bask in the glory of these teasers by Mirko ft. Dave Stewart on colors...

Now that’s so frick-frack-patty-wackin’ delectable (you paying attention DH?  I’m upping the ante on my vocabulary just for you) that I could easily just ignore the words and still enjoy this comic wholeheartedly!  Yeah Mirko!  He's been posting some additional Conan panels on his blog too...check 'em out!

Expect great things from Mirko in the future (although probably at Marvel or DC working on some superhero comic that I won't give a crap about).

That brings us to Dark Horse’s other current Conan offering, which I expect I’d be enjoying right now since two more issues have been released...but only into the hands of a select few.  Who's bright idea was it to associate it with some dilithium-crystal-powered retina-scan-enabled credit card with a built in laser pointer that nobody wants?

Finally, the most exciting news of all...MTV Geek is reporting that Dark Horse has announced a May 29th release date for "King Conan: Hour of the Dragon".  All is forgiven!

In the words of the mighty Dark Horse:

"King Conan has faced many threats to his throne in Aquilonia—but none more deadly than a traitorous alliance backed by the resurrected sorcerer Xaltotun, at whose command mountains crumble!"

And there's pictures!

With names like Timothy Truman, Tomás Giorello, José Villarrubia, and Sanjulian being thrown around, this is sure to be a winner!

Thanks to Mars Singh El-Ton over at The International Robert E Howard Fan Association for the heads up!

Conan Treasure Trove on eBay!

eBay seller johncad3 has an assemblage of all things Conan (well REH, but a lot of Conan) up for sale and even if you’re as broke as I am right now, it’s certainly worth a look.  Apparently this long time collector has fallen on hard times of late, so if you’ve got some extra funds head on over and help a dog-brother out!

Examples of what you’ll find include these way cool ultra-rare Remco Conan action figures that Reis discussed long ago on Crom...

And then there's these...Conan puffy stickers out the ying-yang!

Which has me wondering who it was that invented the puffy sticker, the “puff daddy” of puffy stickers if you will?  Also up for grabs, a Barry Windsor Smith signed portfolio from 1975 that’s sure to fetch a pretty penny…

Another item that caught my eye, this rare promotional copy of a 45rpm record featuring Anvil of Crom from CTB ‘82...Basil Poledouris epicness with all the hissing and popping that only vinyl can provide!

Again, what's above is just a small sample of what johncad3 has up for sale right now, and apparently there’s more to come so keep your wallets open and your eyeballs peeled!

Goofy the Barbarian!

We just heard from Crom! reader Val Fonseca from Brazil, which included this link to his rendition of this well known Conan the Barbarian '82 movie poster...

In Val's own words..."I'm an illustrator and comic artist and created this design in honor of our beloved barbarian."

Which raises the question on everyone's mind: if Pluto is a dog, then what the hell is Goofy?

Great stuff Val, Thanks for the share!

More Conan Collectibles on eBay!

As promised, ebay seller Johncad3 has put more of his astounding collection of Conan and related collectibles up for sale! There are so many incredible items (and many that I’ve never seen before) that I simply must cross-post a few more samples here for all to see!

First up, these three very rare Conan the Barbarian Red Nails comic books from 1975, featuring a very blond Conan!  I'm sure you'll recognize the Barry (Windsor) Smith artwork and we all know who Roy Thomas is.  I've seen thumbnails of these covers on the interwebs before, and if I remember correctly they were published in the UK.  These weren't published by Marvel, and at a glance the logo in the corner looks like that of Curtis...can anyone confirm or deny that?

And who the $&*$#% doesn't like balloons?  They kick almost as much ass as stickers!  Here's a vintage/rare Conan the Barbarian mylar balloon from 1982... almost 18" across, and just like brand new!

We've seen this next little fella on Crom! before.  The Dark Horse Conan "Classic Comic Book Character Series" Statue from 2005...one word: want!

And what's this?  Also from 2005, it's a Conan Animated Red Nails lobby card!  Kind of like salting an open wound seeing this, but at the same time it's pretty frigging cool!

This next item caught my eye because, well, I'm a pretty big fan of scantily clad ladies packing cold steel.  It's Faster and Larson's 7 of Swords portfolio from 1991...7 prints, 11"x14", yum yum!

How's about a press kit from Conan the Destroyer?  Black and white photos and write-ups about the movie and it's characters.  I think I got the pages a little jumbled below, but click on them and have yourself a look-see and a read, it's interesting stuff indeed!

This next item has made several appearances on Crom! but it's so ridiculously cool that when the opportunity arises, it will be seen again!  You guessed it, all 8 inches of vintage 1974 Mego Conan!

Lastly, check out this 1970's Conan belt buckle that Johncad3 describes as EXTREMELY rare.  He explains that he ordered it from a comic book as a kid, and has never seen or heard of another since...I've certainly never seen anything like it!

What's above is just a small sample of what can be yours...if the price is right!  So head on over, bid early, and bid often!

Dark Horse News!

Well, more like Cromsblood news...I picked up the Dark Horse King Conan: The Phoenix on the Sword TPB last weekend – Howard, Truman, Giorello, and Villarrubia - all in one book!  It’s a real gem and one trade paperback that any Conan fan would be proud to call their own!

At the same time I treated myself by FINALLY (I know, right?) buying another Dark Horse comic - Robert E. Howard's Conan: Frazetta Cover Series #1 - The Frost-Giant’s Daughter.  With the Howard/Busiek script, Frazetta cover, Nord interior artwork, and Stewart colors, I would easily consider it to be one of the top ten best Conan comics of all time!

In Cromsblood tradition, they’re bagged, boarded, and safely boxed away so all that’s left is a happy memory.  If that memory vanishes, I’ll likely end up buying them both again!

I’ve been getting the hankering to color things of late, which prompted me to put digital pen to digital paper in an attempt to hone my (somewhat limited) skills.  My latest paint job…a Conan illustration by the very talented Erik Gold

Inspired by big John Buscema’s renditions of our favorite son of Cimmeria, here is Erik's original artwork followed by the painted piece and an alternate “Where’s that damn light switch?” version!

Thanks again to Erik, Von Kalmbach, Ironhand, and Dave at the Official Robert E. Howard Forum for the inspiration, motivation, and feedback!

The Legend of Conan mock-up movie posters are coming at a relentless pace over in the Arnold Fans forums - some of them are quite good, but others are just ridiculous.  C'mon people, if you're going to go to the trouble of whipping one of these up, put a little effort into it!

Rarest Conan Comic Book Ever?

I’m talking about one of several black and white pre-release copies of Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian #1 (October 1970) which were shipped to a select group of fantasy fans and professionals prior to the release of the actual comic.

The intention was to get some feedback prior to publication…it’s all explained in the short blurb below from The Thurian Chronicles of Kull the Conqueror #2 (1971). The only information I’ve been able to dig up is in those same pages, so I can only assume that these preview copies of CTB #1 went to the likes of John Jakes, Mike Resnick, Harold Preece, E. Hoffman Price, and perhaps other famous fantasy writers such as Fritz Leiber, Michael Moorcock, and Lin Carter .

E. Hoffman Price describes the “package” in question (which may in fact have been the Kull pre-release) as containing “Xeroxes”, so perhaps that’s exactly what they were.  Nonetheless, it sounds like there were very few of these pre-releases made available, and they would surely be that much more valuable if they were, for example, copies of the proofs or uncolored pages and/or were still in the envelope that they were shipped in, which would have likely been addressed to one of the famous names and fantasy literary giants mentioned above.

Some healthy speculation on my part above – here are the two pages I’m sourcing this from so you can draw your own conclusions:

My google-fu hasn’t produced any other shreds of evidence as to the existence of these packages, so I’ve got more questions than answers…namely:

  1. Has anybody seen anything like this, either in person or on the mighty interwebs?
  2. Any idea of how many packages were shipped, and to whom?
  3. Have you ever seen a price-tag associated with one of these packages?

A hearty thanks to Crom! reader Dave for the information, and thanks in advance to anyone who can answer one or more of these difficult questions!

I was visiting " Marvel Comics of the1980's the blog" and came across this Conan gag by Paul Smith.  I have been searching the web high and low for this for many years.  I asked a few comic pro's if they remembered it and nobody could recall.  But thanks to our friends over at " Marvel Comics of the1980's the blog" my search is over.  I know I have the comic this appeared in somewhere in my collection.  But seeing it once again brings a smile to my face. ( It is from an issue of Marvel age )
Enjoy!
