Red Hot Sonja Cosplay...Jennifer Kateri!

Des Moines, Iowa’s very own Jennifer Kateri is a fairly recent addition to the cosplay scene, and we welcome her with open sword arms!

Now I could yammer on about how shagadelic Jennifer is, perhaps even write some Haiku or some other nonsense, but I think it best to let the pictures speak for themselves!

Want more? Check her out on the Facebook!

Oh, and here's a recent interview for you sensitive listening types.

Robert E. Howard’s “Red Nails” – Oxford University Press Edition!

Oxford University Press recently released a version of the Robert E. Howard classic Red Nails, and there's a few reason why this adaptation by Bill Bowler deserves mention on Crom!

Firstly, a version of Red Nails or any other REH story adapted specifically for children and early teens just doesn't come along every day.  Oxford University Press calls it "Dominoes", a series that's targeted at English graded readers for upper-primary/lower-secondary students, and one that includes a CD-Rom with an audio version of the book along with various resources for teachers.

Secondly, Red Nails is a superb yarn and a personal favorite of mine, but it doesn't seem to get the attention it righty deserves.  There's no denying that this particular version is tamed down for a younger audience, but it will undoubtedly serve as a gateway to the real thing, something you just won't find in ANY schools in my neck of the woods.

Finally, London based artist Oliver Cuthbertson (link) does a bang up job illustrating the story. It's simple but elegant, and by my estimation Oliver’s depiction of Conan and Valeria is not all that incongruous with the descriptions put forth by REH.  See for yourself!

Perhaps they're not quite on par with George Barr's stunning illustrations from the Donald M. Grant edition, but pretty damn close!  It's worth noting that other talented artists such as Les Edwards, John Howe, MarkSchultz, Barry Windsor Smith, Margaret Brundage, Kája Saudek, and others have tackled Red Nails in some way, shape, or form over the years. I understand the Gene Day also has a Red Nails portfolio published but I haven't seen it.  Truth is, Red Nails isn't all that well represented on the art front, so it's refreshing to see new illustrations depicting such a classic tale.

It's possible that the painting most of us associate with Red Nails is this one by Ken Kelly, which is far from faithful to the original story but a stunning piece nonetheless!

In closing (and on a related note), this most excellent photo courtesy of Mark Singh El-Ton via the The International Robert E. Howard Fan Association on Facebook...Ha!

"Endale Studios is a small, start-up entertainment company, geared toward providing, in our humblest opinion, a much-needed alternative view of the classic Robert E. Howard stories.

We set out on a goal to show our personal vision of how Robert E. Howard's Conan should be presented. Much controversy has been thrown around on how Conan's stories are displayed and dissected. Thus, we give you this ever-evolving, non-monetary rendition of his stories. Developed from a strict passion for the writer and his iconic avatar hero, we are sticking strongly to the true, creative details, according to the author's descriptions and ideals." -Endale Studios, Creative Team

Gornan the Bar-B-Q-Barian!

I'll admit to both watching AND enjoying Alf on the moving picture box as a kid, but the Alf/Conan parody "Gornan" is a bit of a letdown for me.  I'm not sure if it's because I'm older and have higher standards, it's lost some of it's flair in comic book form, or it's simply too far removed from Conan to be enjoyed as a parody of the mighty Cimmerian, but I must admit that I'm not feeling the love.

Regardless, Crom! isn't always held in high regard when it comes to quality, so you're getting 'em whether you like it or not!  And there's no denying that there isn't a shortage of diehardAlffansoutthere, so someone's bound to get a kick out of this...

Gornan's first appearance came in Alf #20 back in 1989.  YOU asked for it! YOU demanded it!  YOU called us at home over the weekend!  So now...

This comic has a bit of a Conan connection, in the form of Marie Severin!  Marie is probably best known in Conan circles for her contributions to Marvel's Kull comics, but it seems like she's had a hand in all things Marvel over the years, including Conan!

Here's Gornan's second and last appearance, "Marx My Words", from the pages of the Alf Holiday Special #2, 1990!

Remember this way cool rework of a classic The Savage Sword of Conan cover...

Well it turns out that the artist, Canada's one and only Mike Myhre of Space Jet Comics, has revamped that cover and added many more pages of similar artwork to produce his very own Conanesque comic book!

Mike - proud parent in his fancy threads...

A look at the samples of Mike's barbaric offering reveals that it's light on dialog, because he's purveying a potent patchwork of pugilism and steely slaughter of smarmy serpent-men, with a hint of naked nubiles for good measure!  Here's some links to Mike's web presence, which is where I came across the samples below... New Crom! reader "M" writes...

"Just came across your blog and I'm loving it, though I looked through the Joe Jusko tags and the John Buscema tags and did not see this masterpiece posted anywhere... Maybe I missed it but I think it deserves to be up there somewhere (if it's not already:-) It was also used as the cover to an issue of Comic Artist magazine. Had a great time looking through your blog. Thanks for posting all that stuff and if I find any other cool Conan art I'll send it along."

Well, as I explained to "M", I grew up on a steady diet of SSOC so it's no great revelation that Joe and John are a couple of my all time favorite Conan artists.

Here's the masterpiece in question!

Thanks for the kind words, and for taking the time to write us M!

Savage Chronicles!

Crom! reader and sword and sorcery fan Fito Garcia dropped us a line a while back to share some fantastic news. He's putting together a brand new Spanish fanzine entitled Savage Chronicles, which will be free to download in pdf format and available for print on Lulu.com!

Fito will be hard at work assembling articles, comics, illustration, and stories, and is hoping for participation from similar fans around the world, namely those who have something sword and sorcery related that they would like showcased in the fanzine.

Anyone interested can send their works to fitogarcia@gmx.com or cronicassalvajes@gmail.com. Unfortunately it's a free fanzine, so you'll enjoy the recognition of being credited for your work (Fito guarantees it), just don't expect either a big fat check or a small skinny check in the mail.

Below, an impressive illustration of Conan that will appear in the zine, courtesy of Spanish artist Juan Luis Rincon!

More Red Hot Sonja Cosplay...Alexia Jean Grey!

Yet another Red Sonja cosplay feature on Crom!, both for my sanity and yours!  This time it's Wisconsin's South Florida's sensual and camera friendly Alexia Jean Grey, who first graced the cosplay scene in 2009 and has turned it into a full-time job.  In her spare time she enjoys playing with her puppies Loki and Cow Dog!

As funny as that last sentence sounds, I cannot take credit for that bit of accidental humor...it turns out that Alexia is a bit of a comedian too!  You can educate yourself about all things Alexia by reading this in-depth interview.

Her costume is quite unique, probably because it's based on an equally unique illustration by Croatian artist Stjepan Sejic, more specifically a variant cover of Dynamite Entertainment's Savage Tales #2!

Find more Alexia on the internet here, there, and below!

Here's something a little different for the parting shot...because as outstanding as Alexia looks in her Red Sonja attire, she one ups that in her Mary Jane body paint!
